Scope and Content
The Miami Times Photograph Collection documents the social, cultural, educational, and civic life of Miami's African American community through photographic images published and maintained by The Miami Times. The collection contains photographs of community leaders, educators, students, civic organizations, religious institutions, cultural celebrations, African Pride events, fashion programs, entertainment activities, athletic achievements, and public gatherings. Featured subjects include prominent local figures, community organizations, educational institutions, pageants, festivals, and events that highlight the contributions, accomplishments, and cultural heritage of African Americans in South Florida.
The photographs provide visual documentation of the development of Miami's Black communities and reflect the social, political, economic, and cultural changes that occurred throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Images related to African Pride celebrations and cultural expression further demonstrate the importance of identity, heritage, and community empowerment within Miami's African American population. Through coverage of local news, community activities, and notable individuals, the collection preserves a historical record of the people, organizations, and events that helped shape the African American experience in Miami-Dade County. As a result, the collection serves as a valuable resource for researchers studying journalism, community history, education, civic engagement, African American culture, and South Florida history.
