This themed collection documents Haitians in South Florida, the U.S. legislative reaction to Haitians in South Florida, and Haitian government and politics. Material was collected by staff of The Black Archives. It consists primarily of clippings dating from 1979 to 1980 from Miami Herald and Miami Times, but also contains clippings from the following publications: Congressional Record, Emerge Magazine, Global Review, Jet Magazine, Liberty News, Miami Courier, Miami News, Saturday Review, and The Monitor. Subjects include: employment; former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide; Friendship M.E. Church; Haitian freedom of the press; Haitian elections; Haitian jails; Haitian relations with the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and the Bahamas; Jean Claude Duvalier (a.k.a. "Papa Doc"); Krome Detention Center; the murder of journalist Jean Dominique; "President for Life" status; refugee stories; the Rio Massacre; the Roman Catholic Church; slavery; Tropical Storm Jeanne; the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service; United States laws governing political asylum; and United States laws governing refugee status.
